Similar to what John said above, I’ve been struck while reading the book by the consistent marriage of the church with politics throughout time- a particularly egregious issue now, especially in the US, but not a new one.

So having read so many chapters of your wonderful, so wonderful book, in its printing and writing presence, i’m often gobsmacked by the history of violence and jealousy surrounding the building and existence of these great buildings, so you would say lacking in the ideals of christianity, how do we look upon this as just the passage of history, can or should we judge such merciless bishops etc, or just say they were passengers on something greater, ie the church that exalts our feelings ?

I would say history repeats itself. Nothin changes. Money is the root of all evil. Cliches, yes, but true--and I think it’s the reality behind them.
