Just an FYI, all—the chat function is now available on Android as well as iOS!
This is a conversation space in the Substack app that I set up exclusively for my subscribers — kind of like a group chat or live hangout. I’ll post short prompts, thoughts, and updates that come my way, and you can jump into the discussion.
To join our chat, you’ll need to download the Substack app. Chats are sent via the app, not email, so turn on push notifications so you don’t miss conversation as it happens.
How to get started
Download the app by clicking this link or the button below. Substack Chat is now available on both iOS and Android.
Open the app and tap the Chat icon. It looks like two bubbles in the bottom bar, and you’ll see a row for my chat inside.
That’s it! Jump into my thread to say hi, and if you have any issues, check out Substack’s FAQ.
Similar to what John said above, I’ve been struck while reading the book by the consistent marriage of the church with politics throughout time- a particularly egregious issue now, especially in the US, but not a new one.
So having read so many chapters of your wonderful, so wonderful book, in its printing and writing presence, i’m often gobsmacked by the history of violence and jealousy surrounding the building and existence of these great buildings, so you would say lacking in the ideals of christianity, how do we look upon this as just the passage of history, can or should we judge such merciless bishops etc, or just say they were passengers on something greater, ie the church that exalts our feelings ?
