Just popping in this fine Saturday afternoon to bring you all the first review of Heaven on Earth!! Of course, reviews are always nerve-racking but I really can’t complain about this one: ‘an impeccable guide to the medieval heyday of cathedral building, when ‘every nation in Christendom’ was vying for the best’.
A huge thanks to Richard Morrison for the stonking review in today’s Times—it’s certainly made my weekend.
PS If you’re interested in reading about the smells and bells I couldn’t include, have a gander at my PhD thesis on the medieval church’s sensory experience 😉
It’s behind a paywall but you can get a free trial. Read the review HERE: https://lnkd.in/eT93T5uv
Thank you so much 😊You absolutely can. That was point--the review notes that the book doesn’t cover music (he’s a musicologist) so I was suggesting people can read my thesis as that covered the entirely of the smells and bells of the medieval church.
Many congratulations, Emma! Well deserved... But can't we just read your PhD thesis on EthOS through the British Library website? Just curious...

Wow, that sounds absolutely amazing! Thank you so very much for pointing this out, and I'm now off straight to the EthOS page!!! Emma, you rock! :)))
I predict many more positive reviews because your work is one of a kind!!👏
Thank you, Andrew! Fingers crossed 😊
