Virtual Refectory: Power and pilgrims
Or should that be Rome and Romanesque at early medieval Ripon Cathedral...
What a bloody fabulous few days I had last week leading study days for Andante Travels! It was lovely to meet some of you, too!
Here a few pics from Day 1 at Ripon, where we were treated to an exclusive tower and roof tour. Of course, I was appropriately decked out in slider sandals, so at my measly 5 foot 2.5 inches, coming down those tight spiral staircases, without a handrail, was a bit daunting. But I soldiered on. The pics were worth me potentially falling and breaking my neck.
I know many of you aren’t too familiar with Ripon Cathedral’s early history (i.e. before the current building in short) but, do not fear; I am here to correct that today. A little man known as Wilfrid was key to its history, plan-form, style, and much more—oh, and he was a buddy of a man named Cuthbert (might be familiar).
Finally, a quick update: this week is the last one of freedom before I start my new job on Monday. I’m nervous but excited. What that means is I may be a little quieter than usual, especially as things ramp up for the release of Heaven in September. I’ve just updated my website EVENTS page with the talks and festivals currently confirmed. More’s to come but if you’re in the area, please do pop by to one of these and say hello. It would be lovely to meet you and sign your copies—and if you haven’t pre-ordered yours yet, remember you still can from your preferred seller here!
