I am sure many of you have come across Instgram pages such as @churchesinchurches, which specialise in representations of churches within actual church buildings—I know, rather meta, hey?! Well, I bet you didn’t know that I technically focussed on this topic for my MA dissertation? The title was Representations of Architectural Space in the Great East Window and the St William Window at York Minster, and I believe the text is available to read in the University of York’s library if you have a few hours of boredom to kill! Nonetheless, this is a topic I have returned to time and time again as it intrigues me. What captures my attention most is just how contemporaneous architectural depictions often were within glass and the wider artistic culture of the Middle Ages. The Great East Window at York is one of the most fascinating examples of this.
