Welcome to Churches & their Naughty Bitsβ¦
A very warm welcome from me, Emma J. Wells (yes, Dr), your host, guide, tutor, moderatorβ¦driver?
Iβm a Church historian, buildings archaeologist, author, broadcaster, and plenty more besides. I'm passionate about all things churches but, more so, about sharing their nooks and crannies, fascinating and naughty bits, to the public. I'm keen to dash those often-stuffy misconceptions which surround the subject. We Brits are often fed our history through the βH(enry) & H(itler)β curriculum, where the church only enters the equation as the great behemoth Henry VIII was forced to destroy. The title, therefore, reflects all thisβand the fact this platform allows me to dig deeper and be just that little bit cheekier. Letβs not forget that research takes collaborationβand I wouldnβt be where I am without a wonderful roster of people, so they might appear from time to time to βchip inβ!
I promise that this will not be a load of boring and tediously lengthy posts, jam-packed with bewildering terminology and references (I will be your interpreter of all that heavy academic stuff). I just happen to have a penchant for the funnier and lighter side of church historyβbut itβs fascinating all the same, and all terribly important. Give it a try. I think you may be surprised to find just how interesting churches can be!
